Designing a title sequence for the 2024 The Spiderwick Chronicles series

Concept

When the 2008 film The Spiderwick Chronicles came out, I was excited to watch it. However, when the scene started with Sir Arthur Spiderwick nervously hiding a research book he wrote about the invisible creatures he discovered, I was terrified. Nevertheless, I was captivated by the movie’s visualization of the unseen realm within our world. In my research, I was also mesmerized by the illustrations and creature descriptions in Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You book.

Inspired by these sources, I designed a title sequence for the 2024 The Spiderwick Chronicles TV series that feels less frightening and more engaging for a younger audience, while maintaining the mysterious and magical aspects of the story. This main title sequence centers around the theme of camouflage to evoke wonder about the possibility of the invisible world and its creatures.

Highlights

When working on this project, I tried to look through the lens of an 8 year old, which is how old I was when I first watched it. Therefore, I studied and designed children-book style illustrations to appeal to my younger self.

Process

I started by identifying the most memorable elements and moments in the movie. Then, I sketched out a rough storyboard, including the creatures from the invisible world and how they could be integrated into the environment.

Treatment

I used this learning opportunity to explore camera and 3D objects in After Effects to make each scene feel more immersive. The muted color palette and grain give the animation a sense of mystery and adventure.
