Creative Brief
Creating a narrative sequence to promote Science Channel's brand message, "Question Everything".
Concept
Even when we think that the food we eat is clean and high-end, there are still possibilities of it containing microplastics. This sequence aims to invite audiences of all walks of life to question what is in all their foods and everything they consume into their bodies. The idea that there are microplastics everywhere, including in foods we eat is represented by the process of a chef preparing a fine dining Omakase sushi that has plastics in it.
Highlights
In this team project, we focused on empowering people to make choices and feel a sense of responsibility for nature and community. We did this by showing an uncomfortable juxtaposition of cleanliness in the restaurant environment and the contamination in the food.
Story
The narrative begins with a sushi chef at a Japanese omakase restaurant skillfully preparing sushi, placing what appears to be gold foil on the sushi. However, it's soon revealed that this element is actually a bread wire tied around a tuna nigiri covered in microplastics. As the camera zooms out, it shows the widespread presence of microplastics in various elements of the restaurant, including a glass of white wine, a soy sauce dish, and the next piece of nigiri. The final frame shows an empty plate with bits of rice and soy sauce, suggesting that the customer finishes the meal, likely unaware of the microplastics in the food.

Process
We went through multiple iterations of sketches and illustrations to make sure that our illustration style and the shape language did not interfere with, but rather clarify the message we were trying to convey

We illustrated a top-lit environment to mimic a high-end omakase restaurant and dramatized the lighting situation, making the scenes feel like a horror movie since unwittingly consuming microplastics and not understanding how it would affect our body functions is a very terrifying situation. It forces the audience to really question what they eat, what kind of food will be safe for them to eat, and if there will be a solution to this issue.
