Visual Identity System, UI/UX
Title
COANIQUEM Care Portal
Category
The objective of this project is to develop a cohesive visual identity system for an existing brand and develop an in-depth mobile app prototype. This project aims to highlight the brand's essence and values by creating a unified design language that resonates with its target audience.
Creative Brief
COANIQUEM (Corporación de Ayuda al Niño Quemado) is a Chilean non-profit organization dedicated to providing free, specialized treatment for children who have suffered severe burn injuries. COANIQUEM provides holistic rehabilitation, including medical care, psychological support, and social services for children and their families. Recognizing the lifelong impact of burn injuries, its departments work together to offer comprehensive and coordinated care.
Overview
This project was developed during my Honors Term to revisit and expand on a design opportunity following my study abroad trip to Chile in summer of 2023. Throughout the process, I learned to integrate insights from multiple interviews into my design to better address the users' needs.
Highlights
The new identity system was designed to celebrate Chile’s close-knit community and its emphasis on collaboration. The logo draws inspiration from Maunimin, a traditional symbol found in the woven patterns of the Mapuche tribe of Chile, representing the union of communities. This Maunimin-inspired logo features smaller elements coming together, symbolizing the strength and beauty of unity—much like the teamwork that defines COANIQUEM’s approach to patient care.
Logo Development

For the headings, I chose Quicksand for its friendly, playful feel, complemented by Komuna Sans for the body copy to add a professional yet approachable touch. The sans-serif body copy ensures clarity and supports quick reading. For the logo type, I selected Sharp Sans Display No. 1 for its perfect balance of professionalism and playfulness.
Typography
Color Palette
To further reflect COANIQUEM’s values of community and collaboration while maintaining a sense of professionalism, optimism, and warmth, I developed an engaging yet non-overstimulating color palette.
The typography was complemented by iconography and illustrations that use a cohesive shape language to reinforce the theme of smaller components uniting to create something meaningful and beautiful.
Brand Elements
Burn treatment often spans months or even years, making it challenging for patients and their family to track the patient’s treatment phase. To address this, I prioritized simplifying the patient’s post-injury journey through a streamlined mobile app interface. By understanding and addressing the pain points of patients and their guardians, the app combines the most essential features, such as appointment scheduling, evolution (treatment progress), medical reports, care plans, and educational resources. This system allows older patients (ages 13-20) and their family to access and manage treatment-related information efficiently.
